Welcome to Ming Chuan University, the big family that is committed to quality higher education that harnesses students’ natural learning abilities. Ming Chuan is a comprehensive university. With the educational philosophy, of “attending to all students with parental care, support and guidance”, Ming Chuan has established an innovative curriculum that promotes learning and embraces each student’s difference. Thereby, the moment you selected Ming Chuan, you have promised yourself a realization of academic success and personal fulfillment. It is our mission to train and prepare you with the skills and knowledge that enable you to achieve your goals.
Now, I ask you to think seriously about this topic: Are you willing to give yourself a chance to achieve excellence? You are giving yourself this opportunity when you join the department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) at Ming Chuan University.
From its inception, TCSL has made Chinese Language Teaching and Bilingual Education its focus. Thanks to all the efforts of former department chairs and presidents of the department students association, TCSL has established a good foundation. More specifically, TCSL has innovated its curriculum in both content and form, including experiential bi-instructors courses and practicum to support a broader set of student aspirations, ranging from Chinese, English, Education and Information in the four years of undergraduate study. Therefore, the moment you chose TCSL, you have promised yourself a brighter future while acquiring the skills to tackle various challenges ahead.
TCSL is committed to endowing you with the knowledge that you will need in your future endeavors. To become a Chinese language teacher, your major responsibility is to teach students whose mother tongues are not Chinese to speak and learn Chinese. Therefore, in the next four years, TCSL not only teaches the latest and most innovative pedagogical theories and techniques, but also incorporates three elements of Chinese - language, literature and culture – needed to meet the demands in the future. Specifically, we give you the tools and skills to advance with the times while using the latest technology to teach Chinese. This is going to be a magnificent journey.
Nevertheless, to fully embrace the advantages, you need to answer the following questions:
How can I enhance my ability to become the part of the vanguard of Chinese education?
How can I manage my time and complete all aspects of learning?
How can I construct and realize my life as a whole?
The answers to these questions are to develop your abilities in all aspects, managing time and exploring your personal strengths. Firstly, developing abilities in all aspects is the key to Chinese education. It is useful to dedicate the four years in TCSL as the year of Chinese, the year of English, the year of Education, and the year of Information, respectively. During that specific year, you are to strengthen and broaden intellectual knowledge of that particular subject and strive for your best. Your E-portfolio will record every effort and achievement you have made during the four years so that you will have a clear appreciation of your strengths and weaknesses.
Secondly, time management is critical to your academic success. To enhance your learning, the Moodle Learning Platform has multiple functions ranging from homework assistance to psychological consultation, as well as participating in various extracurricular activities of student clubs. In addition, the MCU Teaching and Learning Resource Center is where you can find specific assistance to meet your needs. For instance, you can exchange ideas with many international students on Fridays during English Day and attend free TOEIC course to improve your English ability.
Finally, it is also important to identify and to nurture your personal talents. For instance, it would be a wonderful experience to participate in the news anchor selection contest held jointly by Ming Chuan TV, TVBS and CTS and compete for the best anchor if you are interested in journalism. Or you can participate in the training for Public Service Corps, well-trained students who guide and assist honorable guests from abroad during the celebration of our nation’s birthday.
To move forward this mission, Ming Chuan gives serious attention to skills training and has set graduation benchmarks for English, Chinese, Information Technology, Sports and Service-Learning to ensure our graduates are competitive and able to stand out in both the national and international work force. Finally, I remind you to pay close attention to your learning so that you will enjoy learning and have a prosperous future.
